Mini-Mock-COP26 - EDU26

https://www.mockcop.org/

Please note that this page will change over the next few days.

EDU26 is a fringe event, a mini-mock within the Mock COP26.  It is a (one-and-a-quarter) day, online, collaborative and socially-interactive workshop, in the form of a participatory  simulation.  The prime goal for participants is to represent stakeholders and negotiate the main elements for a universal education policy for climate change, and then to draft the terms of a concrete roadmap for the future of climate change education.  The deliverable will be a draft policy text or roadmap, which can be offered as input to the main Mock COP26.

For more information on the sort of objectives and methods used in the EDU26 workshop, please see the pages behind the tabs Objectives and Methods (in the header of this web page).  You will, of course, have to make adjustments in regard to content (objectives), and apply it to climate change and education (not oceans and climate).  The main method use will be participatory simulation; the other three will not be used.

Commitment to attend the full time.

If you wish to participate, it must be from start to finish, with no popping in and out.  Please be sure that you will be completely free for the times of the workshop.  If you are likely to have family or friends interrupting you (physically or by telephone), then best to do this workshop another time (others will be organised).  If you miss early times, such as the Fri session, you will not be allowed to continue with the rest.

Deadline for applications

Wed 18 Nov, 2020:  18h - deadline for application forms (see below).

Dates  & times of the workshop

Fri 20 Nov, 2020:  18h00 to 20h30.

If you work efficiently and prepare your internet connection carefully beforehand, then we will be able to finish early.  You need to attend this part of the workshop to be accepted in the main workshop the next day.

Sat 21 Nov, 2020:  08h30 to 18h30

We start at 08h30 sharp.  You will be free to make and drink coffee while you work.  We can take a short break of people wish.  Lunch will be short, about 40m, so please prepare your lunch the previous day.  In the middle of the afternoon, we will take a break.  The late afternoon will be a debriefing session;, which you are required to attend.

Applications need to be in at least 2 days before the event, that is, by 18h on Wed, 18 Nov 2020.  Qualifying applicants will be accepted as they come in.  It is therefore important to apply early.  Once the session is full, qualifying applications will be held over for a possible second session on 27 and 28 Nov (same or similar times).

Conditions

Because of technical constraints, certain conditions are necessary.  Please consider these carefully before you apply:

  • Max N° participants = 16.  We may go to 18 participants.

  • Every participant needs:

    • To apply;

    • To have a minimum of a large-screen laptop or PC - not smart phones;

    • To have excellent internet connections;

    • To speak good English;

    • To be situated within 2 hours of the Paris time zone;

    • To undertake to participate for the full time (a full days with only short breaks);

    • To have a Gmail account and be able to access google docs;

    • To be present from start to finish (see dates and times above).

    • To have already installed, on your PC or laptop, and tested Discord (a little like Zoom) - https://discord.com/.  You will not be able to use a mobile phone, nor a tablet.

If you do not meet these conditions, please do not apply.  Our sincere apologies.

This makes it even more important for the real COP and other international institutions (including SDGs 4, 7, 8, 10) to bridge the internet and education divide.  You might even consider including this in your EDU26 roadmap.

Note about commitment

Because the workshop will be a collective activity with other participants, your presence throughout the workshop is crucial.  In other words, your contribution to the workshop and to other participants' experience is vital, and so we require that participants be present and engage from start to finish for the whole workshop.

  • Thus, in the application form, we invite you to make a statement or promise or commitment that provides the right reassurance that you will be present and contribute right from the start until the very end.  Remember that this promise is towards everyone in the School, as well as to yourself and the facilitators.

  • If, for example, you are thinking that you might take part for a few hours, then disappear for half a day and then return at the end, it would be better not to apply.  If you are entertaining the idea of slipping in and out, as the fancy takes you, then please do not apply.  If you think that you will join us for 90% of the workshop and then drop out towards the end, we advise you not to apply.  Any of the above is unfair on other participants.

    • However, if your internet connection breaks down and does not come up again, or if you suddenly become ill, or you are the victim of some other 'act of god', we will of course understand - as long as you let us know later what the problem was.
